First of all, Cole nailed the review. Patti and I are only Patty Heads since 2002, but we have developed great relationships with other brethren. This is our third consecutive year at Renfro Valley and we too view it as New Year’s – kicking off the season of shows. We also LOVED the new material. Each band member with whom I spoke (and I consider Shane a band member since I have a soft place in my heart for roadies) said that this is a killer record. Apparently, it will merge Mountain Soul with On Your Way Home to create what Emory calls Mountain Rock. I love it. My personal favorites are Keep Your Distance and Never Ending Love. The latter was covered by Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett and charted for them. But my own love of the song comes from the fact that it was the last song that Clarence White (my guitar hero from the Byrds) recorded before his tragic death in 1973. He cut four songs with Ry Cooder for what was to have been his first solo album. Patty does both covers justice. She can out-cover anyone.
It seems like the bluegrass set is somewhat longer than the past two years, which in my view, is a good thing. From Cole’s reviews of this brief season, it appears that Patty will mix in different songs to the acoustic set, which should keep us guessing and hoping for our favorites as the tour progresses. (Hint: I’ll Never Grow Tired Of You, Sweetheart).
We look forward to this band getting tighter as the tour progresses, as was the case over the past two years. It is amazing how Patty can add new personnel to her band so seamlessly. As much as we missed, Carmella, (sorry, Cole), Garry filled her role. As much as Garry is missed, Troy Engle is a versatile and excellent musician with a great voice. And he clearly has rehearsed the material well. Guthrie seems more comfortable than last year. It may be that some time in the studio with the legendary Albert Lee has rubbed off, although Guthrie is a fine guitarist in his own right. It will be interesting to see how the band sounds with Kylie replacing Marcia.
Next stop for us is Wolf Trap on July 1!
