Mableton House Ampitheatre
Mableton, GA

Review By: Cole
We were very much looking forward to the Mableton show after a frustrating night at a Bluegrass Festival the night before. After two hours of sleep, we packed back up, and headed down to Georgia. I was most excited of the fact that it was in
Georgia- which meant we stood a good chance of seeing Emory!! I dressed for the occasion, and proudly wore my "Emory" shirt!
Tammie noticed ahead of time that the tickets said no cameras...so we decided to call, because I was quite bummed at the thought of no pics. So we called, and were informed that it is usually artists discretion, but this night, no cameras were allowed. I was a little frustrated- after the night before, I wanted a show that would go perfectly like we planned, lol. We found out the governor or something like that was being "Honored" at the show (the venue was renamed after him), and figured that was why. Don't ask- I didn't pay attention to the ceremony. Politics never has been and never will be my thing- so I could have honestly cared less, and was just ready for the show!
In front of the stage were some tables- which were for the "members" and the dignitaries- and we were able to score front row behind that. I thought the seats were going to be awful, but they ended up being REALLY decent seats, I was quite pleased with them.
When the band began to play, we were ecstatic, as this was our first "FULL" Patty show of the year. We noticed that with the absence of the keyboards, Marcia was on the front of the stage, on the right side- we were THRILLED to have her up front! The crowd, which I had thought would give her just polite applause, was thrilled when she came out onstage, much to our surprise! She came out to 'Keep Your Distance', and sounded
amazing on it! They added some stuff to the end of the song that I just loved. It's a great one to start the show off with this year. Martin went directly from the end of that into "Last Thing on My Mind"- loved how he did that!
The only song I didn't much care for on the set list was, "You Don't Seem to Miss Me". I'm just done with that song--sorry to those who love it. I've heard her do it non stop since LSOL was released, and I'd love for her to take the song out and put in something else.
The set list this year is great, I thought. I know a lot of folks had mentioned she didn't sing any of her "earlier" stuff, and I actually liked that. I liked that she opted for new material versus old stuff- maybe the new album will sell wonderfully after all this plugging! She did do "You Can Feel Bad" as well as "She Drew a Broken Heart", which was I was pleased to hear. I love "You Can Feel Bad" live- the whole band gets into it, has a little audience participation- it's a great one. I hope it stays in the set list.
She did the title track of the new album, "Dreamin My Dreams" right before she started the acoustic set, and announced the album was slated to be released around the first of August. She again dedicated the song to Waylon Jennings. This was the first we'd gotten to hear her sing it and it sounded
amazing! It's funny, because when we had first heard the title of the new album, I had told Tammie I didn't really care for the album title, but to watch--there would be a song entitled that and it would end up being of one of my favorites on the cd. I was right! It's an amazing song, and I'm sorry to all you Waylon fans, but....she TOTALLY outdid him on that song! Is there ANYTHING that our girl cannot sing!?
The acoustic set next, and to my absolute delight- Emory came out onstage to play upright bass for her during the set. I was so thrilled! The set list was consisted of:
My Old Friend the Blues- wow! You could her hear so crystal clear on this one, it was just amazing. I was blown away, and it quickly became one of my favorites of the weekend.
Never Ending Love- Patty and Troy sounded fantastic together. I'm really digging him so far- he's got so much talent!
Someone I Used to Know- again, Patty and Troy were great!
Boys are Back in Town- Deanie, Marcia, and Troy kicked this one off, and sounded great!
Daniel Prayed
Grandpa- Patty introduced Emory at this point, and before explaining about the song being about his Papa Cochran, she explained that Emory was in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame- and that she was told this year that she has been invited to become a member of the Hall of Fame as well. The audience seemed quite thrilled- Georgia just loves Patty!
Big Chance- again...I just LOVE this song!! It was awesome to be able to hear Marcia so well, too!!
During the acoustic, Patty had accidentally skipped over a song in the set list...we immediately saw Emory lean over and realize she had- and Guthrie and Deanie went over to get different instruments. They immediately picked right up on it, and started into the exact song Patty was ready to do. This band is amazing.
After acoustic, Deanie began her killer intro to "Nothin Like the Lonely", which was following of course by one of the most anticipated parts of the show...Patty's humming intro! Folks who didn't know the song around us were amazed when she kept humming. Afterwards...they started the music to "On Your Way Home", and we were thrilled to hear them start...and then Patty said two words from it- and switched right into "Here I Am". The band immediately switched right into "Here I Am". We got a laugh out of that- and was pleased to hear "Here I Am" again.
"Lovin All Night" and "Blame it On your Heart" brought the house down at the end of the show. We had an elderly lady, Mary, sitting next to us during the show, who had actually come for the Ceremony prior to Patty's show. We had spoke with her, and she told Tammie she wasn't familiar with Patty, but her late husband had enjoyed as lot of Country Music. Halfway during the show, Tammie asked her what she thought, and she told us that she felt like her husband was there with us- she was VERY impressed. During "Blame it On Your Heart", Tammie had Mary dancing all over the place, teaching her the words---and even had her shouting out the "OH YEAH" part- it was SO funny.
She came back out and did "You Don't Even Know Where I Am", which sounded fantastic, but we were most thrilled when they started into "I Try To Think About Elvis" afterwards. I'm sure the folks behind us didn't much care for the fact that we leapt out of our seats when she started that, but I really didn't care! We waited forever to hear it again --and I'm SO PUMPED that she added it to her set list again!
"Elvis" was her final one for the night, and she left the stage with a bunch of new fans. People who had come just for the ceremony ended up staying her Patty's portion and we heard so many positive comments afterwards.
After our first "full" show, with both acoustic and electric, I can say that the '05 band so far
rocks! I was soooo impressed how great they sounded with it being only their second week out. The band simply isn't complete without Martin, Jimmy and Deanie- it's really hard to imagine the band without them! (Ignoring the time when Deanie was gone for a short while) But this year, it's just amazing...Having Pete back on the road is great. He's always been the
best steel player that's ever played with her, and I missed him while he was gone from the band. I'm so glad he's back for this tour! As I said before, our new band member, Troy Engle, is just beyond amazing. I think he has a killer blend with Patty, can play just about anything you hand him, and he was super nice. We also have Guthrie Trapp back--and while I missed his "Halfway Down" intro, since it wasn't on the set list, I thought he sounded AWESOME in "I Try to ThinK About Elvis". His solo last year was great, really let him shine, and I think he's gotten just SO much better since last year!
And of course...there's Marcia. Now let me explain that Marcia was one of the reasons we did so many shows in one weekend. We knew her last month was going to be June and wanted to see her every chance we could with Patty. After hearing her this year with her, I'm so bummed she's leaving the band because they sound SO WONDERFUL together. You could hear her so well during each and every song, but we really noticed it the most on "Big Chance", and just thought it was great.
We left the show after chatting with the band for awhile (*sighs* except Emory...I was so sad!)....we were planning on traveling overnight to Renfro Valley. I was looking forward to hearing the new stuff again (I'd been working on the lyrics ever since we heard the songs for the first time), but not looking forward to our last Marcia shows! So we hauled out around midnight for our 5 1/2 hour trip to Kentucky...tired as could be, but--hey Patty's worth it!
