Sleepless Nights Track Listing
7/8/2008

Patty Loveless is gearing up to release her 19th album - a covers album - and first for a new label in September. "Sleepless Nights" will drop Sept. 9 on Sagauro Records.

Produced with her husband, Emory Gordy Jr., and backed by Harold Bradley, John Hobbs, Hargus "Pig" Robbins, Harry Stinson, Steve Gibson and Biff Watson, with background vocals by Vince Gill, "Sleepless Nights" features 14 titles that the pair culled from a pool of nearly 500 songs. The album is her first in three years.

"Emory and I were talking over dinner about recapturing some of these moments from my youth," Loveless said, "because I want to inspire and remind people of what country is made of. It takes me back especially to my brother, Roger, and my sister, Dottie, and the music they loved."

"It's a little bit of a history lesson, but I think once you hear the songs, the stories ... you're going to be drawn to it," she said. "People lived a little differently then, but at the same time, there's a lot more in common (with today) than people would think."

The title track is itself a bridge between the Gram Parsons/Emmylou Harris duet and the original Everly Brothers' version. Other songs include Webb Pierce's "There Stands the Glass," George Jones' "Color of the Blues" and Hank Williams' "Cold, Cold Heart."

"I felt like I could dip into my own soul," Loveless says of "Color of the Blues." "It grabs a hold of you and won't let go ... and when you're feeling down and out, that may be all you have to hold onto."

Songs on the CD are:
1. Why Baby Why
2. The Pain of Loving You
3. He Thinks I Still Care
3. Sleepless Nights
4. Crazy Arms
6. There Stands the Glass.
7. That's All It Took
8. Color of the Blues
9. I Forgot More Than You'll Ever
10. Next In Line
11 Don't Let Me Cross Over
12. Please Help Me I'm Falling
13. There Goes My Everything
14. Cold Cold Heart

Patty on Jack Greene's Upcoming CD
1/28/2008

Jack Greene has been in the business long enough to know what a county music audience wants.

"You got to get the feeling and do songs that people can relate to," says Greene in a call from his Nashville home. "You need songs about life."

Greene has been a Grand Ole Opry star since 1967, the year that his hit "There Goes My Everything" helped earn Greene the Country Music Association awards for Male Singer of the Year, Single of the Year and Album of the Year. The song had been the No. 1 country hit for seven weeks in 1966 and has been one of two No. 1 hits that have defined Greene's career.

Still a regular on the Opry, Greene is currently recording a new album, "Precious Memories, Treasured Friends," that is filled with guests, including Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, Riders in the Sky and Travis Tritt - younger country stars paying tribute to an old master.

"We've been working on the project for six months," says Greene. "We're redoing songs I've done before, but some of them are totally different than they were."

Santa Train a return to magic of childhood
11/18/2007

ABOARD THE SANTA CLAUS SPECIAL — More than 60 years ago, 5-year-old twin sisters were among the first generation to experience the Santa Claus Special as it passed near their Trammel, Va., home on its first run.

And more than 40 years ago, a 5-year-old girl saw Santa pass near her home — waving from a caboose — as she played alone in her family’s yard in Elkhorn City, Ky.

On Saturday, all three returned to their roots as the Santa Train, as it is more commonly known, made its 65th run from Shelby, Ky., to downtown Kingsport.

And all three shared the spirit of the occasion with family.

The twins, now North Carolinians, gathered with more than two dozens family members at a stop near their childhood home.

They were among the hundreds of families to do so along the train’s 110-mile route, during which Santa and his helpers distributed more than 15 tons of candy, toys and other gifts at 14 stops.

The little girl who played in Elkhorn City, well, she’s living near Atlanta now: with a husband, some grandchildren — and a Grammy Award, among other honors, for the playing she’s done in the years since.

She’s singer Patty Loveless.

Eager to Reconnect
11/18/2007

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - She was a 6-year-old playing in the backyard of her family's remote home in rural Appalachia when she heard the train cross the river. That's when Patty Loveless first saw Santa Claus waving from the caboose: "I had to do a double-take."

The moment was so unbelievable, that she kept it secret from her brothers and sisters.

It would be decades later before Loveless, a country music legend, would join the big man on the Santa Train - the famed CSX locomotive that makes stops in the mountains as volunteers toss armfuls of candy, Moon Pies, coloring books, dolls and other toys into the crowds, often made up of families in need.

Loveless, a native of eastern Kentucky's Pike County, will be taking her third trip aboard the train on Saturday, during its 65th annual run.

"I just hope I can put a wonderful memory in their minds and bring some kind of joy to them," she said in a recent phone interview from her home in suburban Atlanta.

Patty to Ride the Santa Train
9/28/2007

Grammy Award winner Patty Loveless will once again ride the rails as special guest on this year’s Santa Train, CSX Transportation officials announced Thursday.

This year marks the 65th journey of the Santa Train through 14 stops in Appalachia, one of the region’s most anticipated holiday traditions. On Nov. 17, the Santa Train will travel through three states (Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee), distributing 15 tons of toys and gifts to thousands of people.

Loveless, a native of Pikeville, Ky., where the 110-mile trek of the Santa Train begins, received gifts from the Santa Train as a child. Her past experiences with the annual event led to her participation as the Santa Train celebrity guest in 1999 and again in 2002. Loveless chronicled the excitement at each of the train’s stops in a song she wrote titled “Santa Train” on her 2002 “Bluegrass, White Snow: A Mountain Christmas” album.

“Patty’s personal connection with Appalachia makes her a perfect on-board guest for the Santa Train,” said Michael J. Ward, CSXT chairman, president and CEO. “The Santa Train resonated with Patty, even as a child, and we look forward to providing lasting memories for all those who receive gifts during our 65th year.”

Loveless, who has released 15 albums since 1986, received a Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration in 1999. She has reached the Billboard Top 10 singles list 20 times over the course of her career. Loveless, a six-time Country Music Association award winner, was the second woman to receive the CMA Album of the Year award.

“The Kingsport Tennessee Area Chamber of Commerce is proud and excited to have Patty Loveless joining us on the Santa Train this year,” Kingsport Chamber President Tony Hewitt said. “The Santa Train is such a great tradition, and we are so happy Patty Loveless will be joining us again for this year’s journey.”

Other celebrities who have ridden the train include Alison Krauss, Naomi Judd, Travis Tritt, Kree Harrison and Rebecca Lynn Howard, several governors, U.S. senators and representatives, and other local, state and federal officials.

The Santa Train is a holiday project co-sponsored by CSXT, the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce and Food City Grocers, headquartered in Abingdon.

Donations to the train may be sent to: Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce; Attn. Santa Special; 151 E. Main St.; Kingsport, TN 37662.

Honorary Alumni
01/12/2007

Patty made a surprise appearance last year to perform at a special cermony in honor of the President of KSU- Betty Siegel (pictured with Patty and Emory), and after the ceremony, Patty & Emory were selected as "Honorary Alumni" at Kennesaw State University (along with Atlanta Radio Personality Rhubarb Jones).

They did very small snippets on Patty and Emory in their Fall 2006 Magazine:

Patty Loveless
A native of Pikeville, KY., Loveless took over the country charts with top hits and records in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1995, her album "When Fallen Angels Fly" was named Album of the Year by the Country Music Association, making her just the second woman to ever receive that award. Her vocal duet with Vince Gill, "My Kind of Woman, My Kind of Man", won the 1999 CMA Vocal Event of the Year award and also received a Grammy nomination. Loveless was later nominated for CMA Female Vocalist of the year in 2003.

Emory Gordy Jr
Gordy is a Grammy Award-winning musician, as well as a highly successful record producer. His talents as bassist, arranger, and producer are featured on on more than 270 albums by artists including Alabama, Jimmy Buffett and Patty Loveless, who became his wife in 1989.

Bob Seger Interview
12/10/2006

Scott over at Seger File posted a great interview with Bob on his site, which featured a few questions regarding Patty:

How did you end up recording with Patty Loveless (on the duet "The Answer's in the Question")?
I've been buying her albums since day one. The first song of hers that knocked me out was "Half Over You" from her first album (in 1987). She and Vince Gill were the two who really brought me into country music. I fell under their spell, and I always wanted to do a duet with her.

In that song, you wrote "Will my critics be unkind?" Do you worry about how people perceive you and your music?
I wasn't thinking in terms of music critics, I was thinking in terms of life critics. But originally I had a different line there. I went to Patty's house and she was doing the vocals and we sang the other version, which said, "Are we born to gamble or live by grand design?" We did it that way, and I was getting to leave when I ran the other line by her, which said, "How will I be remembered? Will my critics be unkind?" She and Emory Gordy (Loveless' producer and husband) liked it that way better, and I think it's a better line.

Thanks Scott!
