Pop Entertainment Interview
Posted on 15 Nov 2008

When Patty Loveless was a little girl, she had an ongoing argument with her father. Each week the two would settle into their living room in Pikeville, Kentucky to watch television. Her father, a coal miner and country music fan, wanted to watch the Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt Review, but his daughter preferred The Flintstones. “Of course Daddy would always win out,” she admits, “and I’m so glad he did. It taught me a lot.”

And we’re so glad he did. Loveless, who possesses a plaintive, aching voice with the elastic sensibility of a steel-guitar, is one of the last genuine country singers in a genre gone far too pop. One of the most expressive voices in any genre of music, her yearning alto resides somewhere at the intersection of Twang & Soul. She is the torchbearer for the brutally honest approach that defined the careers of Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn (who is Loveless’ distant cousin).

Anyone who wants to know what country music is really about — the heartache, the despair, even the drinking — need look no further than Loveless’ latest CD: Sleepless Nights: The Traditional Country Soul of Patty Loveless (Saguaro Road Records). Gathering songs for the project, she and her husband, producer and musician Emory Gordy, Jr., listened to hundreds of classic country songs before settling on

LOVELESS TO RELEASE TWO ADDITIONAL DIGITAL TRACKS ON SLEEPLESS NIGHTS
Posted on 11 Nov 2008
Nashville, Tenn. (November 7, 2008) - Fans of Patty Loveless waited three long years for a new record from the Appalachian alto, and this past September Sleepless Nights gave way to a collection of songs well worth the wait. After years of listening to hundreds of records and hand picking the best selections Patty whittled her list down to the fourteen tracks featured on the album. But with over 500 meaningful country classics in the running who can blame her for finding a few more ways to make the old new again…

On December 2nd, Patty will release two additional tracks across digital music stores including iTunes, Rhapsody, and Amazon MP3.

Exclusive: Behind 'Sleepless Nights' with Patty Loveless
Posted on 09 Nov 2008
By: Matt Bjorke

Last Friday, Halloween 2008, I was lucky enough to talk with one of my musical heroes Patty Loveless on the phone. Over the course of thirty minutes we talked like two old friends and topics discussed included the new album “Sleepless Nights,” her passion to spread the word about the classic artists of the past onto a newer generation, the freedom of recording outside of the pressure cooker that can be the major label system and me introducing her to Joey+Rory. It was a fun conversation and one I won’t soon forget.

Matt Bjorke: With “Sleepless Nights” you’ve recorded some of your all-time favorite songs. How did it come about?

Patty Loveless: Well, I would go back and say when I was the age of 12, my brother Roger brought me around to local country jamborees around Louisville, KY and we started singing and performing together and we were doing quite a few of these songs. I was doing more of the female songs like Loretta Lynn, Brenda Lee, Wanda Jackson, Connie Smith and Patsy cline while at other times I’d do some Merle Haggard songs. Also, at that time I would perform some Linda Ronstadt songs. Roger was doing stuff like Conway Twitty, Hank Sr. and of course, Elvis. (laughing), Everybody did him. He and I would do Conway and Loretta songs and also some Ernest Tubb and Loretta songs.

Prestonsburg Review
Posted on 05 Nov 2008
I have put up my Prestonsburg, KY show review, and am working on the photos. Shows and Road Trips every weekend are definitely wearing me out, but I wouldn't have it any other way! Photos should pop up tomorrow, and then I'll head out to Atlanta for her show Friday night.

The Opry has added Patty to their schedule for Saturday, November 22nd! You can visit opry.com to buy tickets if you'll be in the Nashville area-- and if not, stay tuned to see if this will be a televised night for the Opry. As always, you can listen to both Opry shows online at wsmonline.com!

Fighting for the Soul of Country Music
Posted on 04 Nov 2008
Patty Loveless, a traditional country singer, operates outside the system. It allows her to talk openly.

“It’s becoming more pop,” Loveless, 51, said about country, a genre many think has left the dusty back roads for good.

“I don’t want to see country music lose its identity. And that is the music I came up with.

“I just don’t want to see the youth of today or tomorrow not to be able to experience the music of the past. It’s their heritage.”

At least Loveless, who in early September released “Souless Nights,” a record steeped in country soul, is doing her part. She will perform two shows Saturday at the Newberry Opera House.

Country music was a large part of Loveless’ family life growing up in Kentucky. Her brother’s collection of 45s included Webb Pierce and George Jones.

While her mother did housework, they would listen to the radio together.

“She used to love to mop the floors — well, she didn’t love to — but she loved to listen to the Opry,” Loveless said. “We’d listen to the Opry while I was watching her mop the floors.”
